Thanks to you and your generous donations we raised $350 in our holiday giving campaign! We used $150 of that money to get our holiday adoptee Jennifer a new backpack, hat, scarf, gloves, and lots of yummy food like soup, dried fruit, and granola bars. (Okay fine, we also got her some peanut butter pretzels because those are our favorite.) The remaining $200 was given as a monetary donation to STEAC. Thank you so much to all of you who have such generous hearts during such a challenging year.
Wishing all of you Happy Holidays, The svAWIS Board Last night's panel discussion was a hit! Dr. Diane Beckles, Dr. Janet Tien, and Dr. Julianne McCall offered their perspectives and advice on career paths, workplace culture, mentoring, and gender bias in their sectors. Thank you again to these amazing women for volunteering their time to talk to us in AWIS!
Erika has served on the svAWIS board for the last two years as our Public Relations chair. She also spends a significant amount of her time volunteering with the Girl Scouts. Congrats to Erika for this awesome achievement and thank you for all you have done for svAWIS!
The Sacramento Valley AWIS Board acknowledges and stands against all forms of racism. The last few weeks have brought back to the forefront of our nation’s attention the racial inequality faced daily by many. Our society is traumatized by the systemic, institutional racism that pervades the structures that govern and rule. We all share the responsibility to end systemic racism. It requires a lifelong commitment.
While the Association for Women in Science has focused on breaking down the systemic barriers that limit the advancement, equity, and participation of women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), we recognize that women of color in STEM, and Black women in particular, carry the burden of racism in everyday life, workplaces, and educational settings. It is critical that we as a STEM organization recognize their experiences and not let them stand alone. We reaffirm our commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive scientific enterprise, which includes confronting racism. We call on those in our network and the scientific community to take a stand. We as a Board are constantly inspired by the energy, insights, and empathy of our members, and we commit to providing you resources for becoming agents of change. Yours in Science and Social Justice, The Sacramento Valley AWIS Board We know that this is an interesting time in human history. In an effort to stay connected and help support our members during this time, we will be hosting an online happy hour every other Thursday starting April 2nd. Grab a glass of wine or a bottle of beer or a nice sparkling La Croix and dial in from your couch or your kitchen table. We are here to support you. In solidarity, The svAWIS Board |
