Mentorship Program
Our Mentorship Program is offered every other year. We are currently offering the program in spring of 2023, and then again in 2025.
*****
Back by popular demand in 2023, svAWIS will be hosting a mentorship program pairing mentees with industry and academic professionals to learn about career development. People from all disciplines, genders, career levels, and US locations are welcome! We are incorporating both virtual and in-person events, and participants have the option to participate completely through virtual means. The program lasts for about three months, with a kick-off event in late March, a mid-program workshop in April, and a finale in-person/virtual hybrid event in May. You do not need to be a member of svAWIS or AWIS to participate, though if you enjoy our programming we do encourage it since proceeds go to support our efforts and events! For more details about the program and what to expect, please watch the short informational videos at the bottom of this page (Note that the dates mentioned have changed, but the format remains the same).
Participation in the kick-off event is MANDATORY for your participation in the program.
The kick off will be held on Wednesday, March 29th 2023 at 6:00 pm PST on Zoom.
If you would like to participate as mentor or mentee, sign up HERE.
*Note: The max capacity for this program is 90 people. After that you will be placed on a wait list.
A general outline of the program is as follows:
* We welcome participants to enroll in the program as Mentors, Mentees, or both! A large portion of our participants are graduate students, postdocs, or early career professionals who could benefit from the experience of both mentoring and being a mentee. If you just got your first job outside of your degree, have experience as a postdoc, or recently got your degree, then you have knowledge that others could benefit from! Consider being a mentor! (Note: So far very few undergraduates have signed up, and if this is the only career stage you'd want to mentor, it is possible there won't be enough students to match you with a mentee. Updated 2-28-23)

A general outline of the program is as follows:
- Mentors and mentees* will be self-matched. In late March, we will hold a Speed-Mentor/Mentee-Matching kick-off event in which mentors and mentees will meet and get to know each other in small breakout room groups. Afterwards, both mentors and mentees will be asked to submit their top three choices of partner and pairs will be determined. The kick-off event attendance is MANDATORY.
- Email, phone, and/or video meetings once per month. Mentors and mentees are expected to have a discussion outside of the formal AWIS events at least once per month. These meetings can be about anything related to career or personal development, and we provide materials to help give ideas and support for structuring these interactions.
- Three official svAWIS events. We will hold a Kick-off event in late March, a Mid-Point workshop event in April, and a Finale event in May. Attendance at the mid-point and finale events is not required but is highly recommended as it increases the benefit that you receive from the program.
